There’s something so special about an extended family photography session, capturing different generations from one family, seeing cousins giggling together and grandparents beaming with pride. This recent session in beautiful Surrey captured all that and more. It was such a gorgeous celebration of family. A little moment in time preserved forever through timeless, natural portraits.
Why Extended Family Sessions Matter
As families grow, so do the memories. But it’s not every day that everyone gets together, especially with the fast pace we all seem to live at! It’s not always easy to coordinate so many diaries but it’s so worth it when it happens. And that’s what makes extended family photography so meaningful. It’s a rare opportunity to document grandparents with grandchildren, cousins who are more like siblings, and the unique dynamic that big families share.
Quite a few members of this family were on a short visit over from their home in the States. They came together with the Surrey based side of the family on a warm summer afternoon for a relaxed outdoor session. They’d coordinated outfits beautifully, in soft blues, pinks and neutrals. The entire shoot had an effortless, polished feel while still being full of fun and energy. We had time to capture images of the whole group, each family, all the cousins and each child infdividually – as well as some sweet in between moments.
Natural, Relaxed Portraits Full of Personality
In my experience, the most beautiful family portraits happen when children are allowed to be themselves. Whether that’s a cheeky smile, a tight hug with a sibling, or a quiet moment between a grandmother and granddaughter, I”m always looking to capture real connection. I love the image of mum and daughter below. Their closeness is so lovely to see. No awkward poses, just natural smiles and love.

What makes my photography special is not just the final images, it’s the whole experience. From support choosing outfits as well as the perfect Surrey location, to gentle posing direction and an eye for detail, I work hard to make sure every session feels relaxed, fun, and effortless.

This little one above had so much charm and natural confidence. Lying in the grass, totally at ease, he gave me one of my favourite portraits of the day – proof that a laid-back approach really does bring out the best in children.
